In a strong week for UMSL Tritons athletics, the men’s basketball team showcased their prowess in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) by securing impressive victories against Maryville and Truman State, further solidifying their standing in the conference.
The UMSL men’s basketball team, which had faced some setbacks in the High Desert Classic before Christmas, rebounded with authority. Their first win came on the road as they triumphed over Maryville with a final score of 70-62. The Tritons then continued their winning streak by beating Truman State 81-67 in a home game, improving their season record to 7-7, with an impressive 5-1 record in GLVC play.
Sophomore guard Matt Enright was a standout performer, averaging 15.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, and five assists across the two games. Enright particularly shone in the game against Maryville, where he led the team with 19 points. The Tritons demonstrated their depth as three players reached double figures, contributing to a decisive 40-29 second-half advantage over Maryville. In the game against Truman State, Emanuel Prospere II delivered an outstanding performance off the bench, scoring 20 points and adding seven assists, while forward Troy Glover II posted a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. UMSL’s interior presence was dominant, outscoring Truman State 40-22 in the paint.
Looking ahead, Coach Bob Sundvold’s team has a single game on their schedule this week as they prepare to host McKendree on Saturday.
Meanwhile, in women’s basketball, the Tritons broke a four-game losing streak with a thrilling 61-60 victory over Truman State. Despite trailing 44-41 entering the fourth quarter, UMSL showed resilience and determination. Brooke Woodyard’s two crucial free throws with 4:09 left in the game gave the Tritons the lead, which they held onto. Jalysa Stokes was the standout performer, scoring a game-high 27 points, with six of those crucial points coming in the final three minutes. Stokes also contributed with season-high stats in rebounds, assists, and steals. Additional contributions from Alex Wolff and Morgan Ramthun secured the win.
This victory was a much-needed boost for the Tritons after facing tough losses to Purdue Northwest (70-62), Wisconsin–Parkside (88-65), and Maryville (70-53) over the winter break, with two of those games being played on the road.
As the women’s basketball team looks to build on this momentum, they will host McKendree in their upcoming game, aiming to continue their journey in the win column.
