Algerian boxer Imane Khelif has proven that resilience and determination can overcome any challenge. Amid a storm of gender controversy, Khelif has punched her way into the semifinals of the women’s 66kg boxing category at the 2024 Paris Olympics, guaranteeing at least a bronze medal. But for Khelif, bronze isn’t enough—she’s got her eyes set on gold.
At just 25 years old, Khelif defeated her Hungarian opponent in the quarterfinals, securing Algeria’s first Olympic boxing medal in over two decades. This remarkable achievement is especially significant given the public scrutiny Khelif has faced.
Khelif was one of two female boxers disqualified from the 2023 Women’s World Championships after failing testosterone and gender eligibility tests. Despite this, she was permitted to compete in the Olympics, where she’s now making history.
In a heartfelt interview, Khelif shared her ambitions: “Winning an Olympic medal is a dream come true, but I’m not stopping at bronze. I want to make Algeria proud by winning gold and inspire the young athletes of our country.”
Khelif also dedicated her victory to Mustapha Moussa, Algeria’s first Olympic boxing medalist, who recently passed away.
