Noah Lyles of the USA claimed the title of the fastest man in the world after winning the 100m final at the Paris 2024 Olympics by a mere 0.005 seconds. The race, which took place on August 5th, saw Lyles cross the finish line in 9.79 seconds, just ahead of Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson.
The finish was so close that the winner had to be determined by a photo finish, with Lyles ultimately securing the gold. This victory is particularly special for Lyles, as it marks his first Olympic gold in the 100m, adding to his 2023 World Championship titles in both the 100m and 200m.
Lyles’ win also ends a 20-year drought for the USA in the men’s 100m at the Olympics, with the last gold medal in this event being won at the 2004 Athens Games.
Kishane Thompson of Jamaica earned the silver medal with a time of 9.79 seconds, just 0.005 seconds behind Lyles. The bronze medal went to Fred Kerley, another American sprinter, who finished with a time of 9.81 seconds.
The men’s 100m final at Paris 2024 will be remembered as one of the most exciting races in recent history, with Noah Lyles emerging as the new Olympic champion by the slimmest of margins.
