The Para-triathlon events scheduled for Sunday at the Paris 2024 Paralympics have been postponed by 24 hours due to poor water quality in the River Seine. Heavy rainfall in Paris caused a significant drop in water quality, prompting World Triathlon to reschedule all 11 races for Monday, subject to further water quality tests.
This marks another challenge for Paris 2024 organizers, who have faced multiple disruptions related to events in the River Seine. Earlier in the Games, the Olympic triathlon events experienced delays due to similar weather issues.
Originally, the Paralympic triathlons were set to occur over two days—Sunday, 1 September, and Monday, 2 September—but were consolidated into Sunday due to a forecast of bad weather. However, the rain arrived earlier than expected, necessitating another schedule change.
World Triathlon’s statement emphasized that athlete health is the priority, and current water conditions do not meet the established thresholds for safe swimming. Great Britain has 11 athletes competing in seven events, including reigning PTS5 women’s champion Lauren Steadman and top contenders Dave Ellis and Alison Peasgood.
