Johnson, who has worn the No. 3 jersey for his first five NBA seasons, announced on Instagram that he will be switching to No. 0 for the upcoming 2024-25 season. This change will allow Paul, who has worn No. 3 throughout his storied 20-year career, to continue sporting his signature number.
Johnson, entering his sixth season with the Spurs, averaged 15.7 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.8 assists in 2023-24. Despite moving into more of a bench role, Johnson remains a key piece for the Spurs’ future. Paul, coming off a season with the Golden State Warriors, brings his wealth of experience to a young Spurs team in desperate need of leadership. While his numbers last season (9.2 points, 6.8 assists) were a step down from his prime, Paul’s presence is expected to be pivotal in the development of rising stars like 2023-24 Rookie of the Year Victor Wembanyama and first-round pick Stephon Castle.
San Antonio is in the middle of a rebuilding phase, and while they’ve missed the playoffs for five consecutive seasons, Paul’s leadership could be just what they need to guide the team’s young core.
